We've reached out to EA for more information. The title received an R18+ rating in Russia due to a law restricting the depiction of same-sex relationships to minors. The Sims 4, launched last week, includes both same-sex and heterosexual relationships. Where the original Sims offered no marriage and The Sims 2 included a "joining party" for same-sex relationships, fully-fledged gay marriage was introduced with The Sims 3. The issue was brought to the forefront when German gamer Anna Eichenauer, creator of gaming and pop culture YouTube channel “Why Stuff Is Great,” published a video demonstrating the inability to share one of her Sims with any of the blocked terms in its name or description. The video embedded below shows this process in more detail but to summarise, married Sims can request a separation from their spouse. Tested out and confirmed by Kotaku, The Sims 4 players are unable to upload their characters to The Gallery if LGBT-centric descriptors such as “Lesbian,” “Homosexual,” “Queer,” or "Gay" are used in a character’s name or description. With this module, married Sims can separate for a period of time before either deciding to go ahead with a divorce or get back together. "We can confirm that we are aware and that we are working on a fix which will update the automatic filtering system to permit the use of the words 'Gay,' 'Lesbian' and 'Homosexual,'" an EA Australia representative told IGN.
